Meetings have taken place in the United Arab Emirates between Iraq's Ministry of Health and senior representatives of major international pharmaceutical companies, aimed at encouraging their return to the Iraqi market. British Ambassador to Iraq Irfan Siddiq attended and assisted with the meetings.
The most significant meeting was with GSK, a British pharmaceutical company specialising in oncology medicines and vaccines, which serves an estimated 2.5 billion people worldwide and reports annual sales exceeding $3 billion.
GSK had a longstanding presence in Iraq before withdrawing from the market in recent years. According to a statement by Health Minister Abdulhussein Aziz, the meetings were productive and covered the conditions required for these companies to resume operations in Iraq.
Representatives of GSK and other British pharmaceutical companies are expected to visit Iraq in mid-October to finalise details of their return.
