Iraq Plans Digital Platform to Connect Farmers with Markets

By John Lee.

Iraq's Ministry of Agriculture is studying plans to launch a digital agricultural marketing platform designed to connect farmers with local and international markets. The ministry's administrative deputy minister, Dr Mahdi Sahr al-Jubouri, chaired a meeting of the committee tasked with preparing the study.

According to the ministry, the platform aims to:

  • Provide real-time price data to reduce intermediary exploitation and ensure fair returns for farmers
  • Support smallholder farmers by facilitating buying and selling and expanding direct access to buyers
  • Reduce financial risks through secure payment tools and reliable delivery guarantees

The initiative is said to align with the government's goals on food security, digital transformation, and sustainable development, including improving supply chains and reducing waste.
