Iraq's Deputy Minister of Oil for Gas Affairs, Dr Izzat Sabir Ismail, addressed the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) meeting in Moscow on Tuesday, outlining the country's priorities for developing both free gas and associated gas resources.
According to the Ministry of Oil, Dr Ismail described gas sector development as a national priority and a key pillar for energy security, economic diversification, and sustainable development.
He said the government has translated its focus on gas into contracts and projects covering gas field development, associated gas gathering and processing, and the expansion of transport and utilisation infrastructure, in cooperation with international companies. Iraq has made measurable progress in increasing gas utilisation volumes and adding new processing capacity, and has drawn up phased plans to end associated gas flaring.
On the sidelines of the forum, Dr Ismail met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, conveying greetings from the Iraqi government. He also held meetings with the energy ministers of the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Azerbaijan, and Turkmenistan.
