Deputy Baghdad Mayor Naeem al-Kaabi on Wednesday opened the al-Sadr waste processing plant in al-Habibiya region, making it the largest in the Middle East.
It was designed by a Turkish company at a cost of 26 billion dinars [$22m] and completed in 20 months, according to a report from Aswat al-Iraq.
The projects will serve Sadr City and municipalities in al-Rusafa region by gathering garbage and compressing it into closed containers before sending it to a dump.
