By John Lee.
A US court has ordered Iraq to pay an American law firm $5.7 million in damages, interest and costs, relating to an unpaid legal bill.
Mills Law Group LLP (MLG) took the state of Iraq, and the Iraqi Ministry of Justice, to court following Iraq's non-payment of fees for the company's services regarding Iraq's litigation against Wye Oak Technologies.
Judge Royce C Lamberth found that Iraq's initial lack of communication, despite consistent requests from MLG, and Iraq's subsequent attempts to avoid payment, represented "a clear lack of good faith on Iraq's part."
Awarding MLG more than $5.7 million in total, he concluded:
"In both this case and the underlying Wye Oak litigation, Iraq has demonstrated a willingness to benefit from the services of US-based entities without paying for them."
