Iraq Opens 2 New Pharmaceutical Factories

By John Lee.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani has inaugurated the Mansour and Mustaqbal pharmaceutical factories, supporting a national initiative to increase self-sufficiency in medicine production.

  • The Mansour facility, now reactivated, will produce 14 million therapeutic syrups, 140 million tablets, and specialized treatments for cancer.
  • The Mustaqbal facility will manufacture over 300 drug types, including 15 million eye drop units and 110 million ampoules annually, focusing on critical and cancer therapies.

Al-Sudani highlighted a threefold rise in contracts for locally made pharmaceuticals as part of a government-backed strategy to boost domestic drug production. Key incentives include banking support, sovereign guarantees, and streamlined registration processes to facilitate technology transfer and partnerships with international companies.

By mid-2025, the government aims to fully cover treatment needs for chronic and cancer-related illnesses.
