Innovative Ideas for Sustainable Housing Showcased at BEIT Green Home Hackathon
The BEIT Green Home Hackathon, held on November 6th, 9th, and 10th, brought together 35 architects, engineers, students, and entrepreneurs at Mosul Space to find practical solutions for Iraq's housing and energy challenges.
Organized by the International Trade Centre (ITC) and funded by the European Union's Building Equitable and Inclusive Transformation (BEIT) project in partnership with Mosul Space, the event aimed to develop affordable, sustainable housing ideas to address pressing local needs.
Event Highlights
Innovative Solutions: The hackathon produced two winning projects:
- HeriTech created cost-effective, eco-friendly bricks using mud, recycled plastic, and cement, designed to reduce building costs by up to 51%.
- GVI (Green Ventilation and Insulation) developed vertical gardens and green facades to provide natural cooling and insulation, cutting energy costs and improving air quality.
Participants received mentorship from local and international experts, including professionals from Google and the Iraq Green Building Council. Over 200 applicants applied to participate, with 40 selected for the event. Teams presented their final ideas to a panel of judges, with two winning teams awarded 500,000 IQD prizes and a chance to compete for a 2 Million IQD grant.
What's Next?
The two winning teams will refine their prototypes and prepare for the next round of funding. Other participants are being supported through networking opportunities and mentorship to further develop their ideas.
Dr. Bassam Al-Hafiz, a judge and expert in sustainable architecture, said:
"Events like this inspire innovative solutions while addressing real-world challenges. It's amazing to see young minds working together for a more sustainable future."
