Nineveh's First Youth-Led Climate Club Launches in Mosul
On December 14, 2024, from 3:00 to 5:00 PM, Mosul Space conducted the opening session of Climate Space, the first youth-led club in Nineveh dedicated to tackling environmental and sustainability challenges. This initiative provides young people with the tools and platform to address pressing local issues like water scarcity, waste management, and the lack of green spaces. The launch event started with an introduction to Climate Space and its mission to empower youth as leaders in environmental action, followed by an overview of the main issues threatening Nineveh's environment and a group activity to determine possible solutions to the most pressing issues.
Participants heard an insightful presentation from Mohanad Rafea, an Environmental Expert and Programme Associate of WFP, on the region's water scarcity challenges and their environmental impacts. The session concluded with an open discussion where attendees shared their ideas and vision for Climate Space's future. The first session marks the beginning of a larger journey. Climate Space plans to hold regular meetups, collaborate on community projects, and inspire similar youth-led initiatives across Iraq.
"The energy and ideas shared during our first session were inspiring. It's clear that young people in Nineveh are ready to take on the challenge of building a sustainable future. Climate Space is here to give them the platform and tools they need to make real, lasting change," said Abdulla Thaier, Programs Officer at Mosul Space.
As Nineveh recovers from years of conflict, it faces significant environmental challenges that demand immediate action. Climate Space fills a critical gap by bringing together young people, experts, and community leaders to create practical, community-driven solutions. From organizing tree-planting campaigns to running recycling projects, Climate Space focuses on actions that make a real difference in people's lives.
