Intensified Efforts to Contain Foot-and-Mouth Disease in Iraq

By John Lee.

The Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture has said it has intensified its preventive measures to combat the spread of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) and protect the country's livestock.

The campaign is being led by the Veterinary Directorate, under the supervision of Dr. Abbas Jabr Al-Maliki, Minister of Agriculture, and with direct oversight from Dr. Mithaq Abdul-Hussein Al-Khafaji, Deputy Minister for Technical Affairs, and Dr. Thamer Habib Al-Khafaji, Director General of the Veterinary Directorate.

The ministry has instructed veterinary hospitals to continue monitoring, investigating, and promptly reporting suspected cases, particularly in affected areas such as Fudhailiyah, Jurf Al-Naddaf, Hay Al-Wahda, and Nahrawan in Baghdad, as well as other identified outbreak zones. Movement of livestock to and from infected areas will be restricted for 14 days to contain the disease.

Additionally, the ministry is supplying veterinary hospitals with disinfectants, antibiotics, and fever-reducing medications, while also distributing these supplies to farmers when necessary.

As part of an awareness campaign, the Veterinary Directorate has been organizing educational workshops and seminars in collaboration with the Agricultural Guidance and Training Directorate to educate farmers on disease management and preventive measures.
