Iraq to Deploy Environmental Pollution Sensors Nationwide

By John Lee.

Iraq's Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani has approved measures to activate environmental pollution monitoring sensors in meteorological stations across the country, according to Dr. Salman Al-Bahadli, Director General of the General Authority for Meteorology and Seismology.

This initiative follows continuous support from Transport Minister Razzaq Muhaibis Al-Saadawi, who highlighted the importance of integrating pollution detection sensors into Iraq's 24-hour operational meteorological stations.

Dr. Al-Bahadli explained that these devices will issue early warnings when pollution levels exceed permissible limits, helping to protect public health, particularly for individuals with respiratory conditions. The sensors will also facilitate monitoring of air, water, and soil quality, contributing to early warnings and environmental risk mitigation.

According to Iraq's Climate and Scientific Research Center, the sensors will help identify industrial and natural pollution sources, allowing authorities to formulate strategies for pollution reduction. Additionally, they will provide accurate data for university researchers and scientific studies, supporting climate change assessments and enabling data-driven environmental policymaking.
