By John Lee.

Iraq has signed a contract with China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) to build a comprehensive Medical City in Dhi Qar Province.

The 490 billion Iraqi dinar [$374 million] project was finalized under the supervision of the Dhi Qar Reconstruction Fund and the Ministry of Health.

During the signing ceremony, Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani reaffirmed the government's commitment to advancing healthcare reform, emphasizing that Dhi Qar's citizens deserve a world-class medical facility to reduce dependence on treatment abroad. He highlighted ongoing efforts to implement the Health Insurance Law, localize pharmaceutical production, and accelerate the construction of seven hospitals across multiple provinces.

The Medical City will comprise 13 integrated medical facilities, including seven hospitals with a total 700-bed capacity:

  • 200-bed General Hospital
  • 100-bed Pediatric Specialty Hospital
  • 100-bed Women's Hospital
  • 100-bed Hematology and Oncology Center
  • 100-bed Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology Hospital
  • 50-bed Emergency Hospital
  • Specialized Outpatient Clinics Complex

Additional components include forensic medicine, research and studies centers, a blood bank, and residential facilities for medical professionals. The first phase will cover 93 dunums [9.3 hectares], with a 39-dunum expansion in the second phase.

This investment is part of broader structural reforms in Iraq's healthcare sector, which includes joint operation models with international providers to finalize delayed hospital projects.
