Spain's LALIGA has advanced its partnership with the Iraqi Football Association (IFA) by holding an economic control workshop in Madrid for representatives of Iraq Stars League (ISL) clubs.
The initiative forms part of a wider consultancy project aimed at professionalising Iraqi football and ensuring the long-term sustainability of its competitions.
The workshop addressed financial management, competitive sustainability, and economic control, with LALIGA President Javier Tebas presenting diplomas to participants. He emphasised the importance of financial fair play as a core element of successful and competitive leagues.
Carlos Ruiz-Ocaña, Head of International Special Projects at LALIGA, said the collaboration with IFA demonstrated how Spanish expertise can be adapted globally to strengthen sports industries. He highlighted areas such as grassroots football development, league professionalisation, audiovisual broadcasting, and anti-piracy measures.
LALIGA pointed to its own success in Spain, where rigorous financial oversight reduced club debts with public administrations from more than €650 million to just €3 million and eliminated €89 million in unpaid player wages, setting an international benchmark for solvency and sustainability.
