Iraq Wins $49m Lawsuit in Paris

By John Lee.

Iraq's Ministry of Justice has announced successfully winning a lawsuit before the Judicial Court in Paris. The case was filed by the Gulf Falcon Company, which had sought arbitration and a claim of USD 49 million against the Iraqi government.

According to the Director General of the Legal Department at the Ministry, Mr. Haitham Mohi Radi, the company had signed two contracts with the Iraqi government in 2000 to operate the air transport sector.

However, the exceptional circumstances and events following 2003 led to the suspension of those contracts. The company later attempted to seek international arbitration demanding substantial financial compensation, but the Ministry's legal team was able to refute all claims and demonstrate the soundness of Iraq's legal position.

Radi added that the Legal Department had made extensive efforts in following up the case since the dispute began in 2023, coordinating closely with the relevant government bodies until the final ruling was issued in favour of Iraq. He emphasised that this judicial victory reflects the competence of Iraqi legal professionals and their ability to defend the state's rights and interests in international forums.
