Deepest Horizontal Well Drilled at Bazargan Field

By John Lee.

The Ministry of Oil has announced the completion of drilling the deepest horizontal well at the Bazargan oil field.

According to Hussein Kazem Laibi, Director General of the Maysan [Missan] Oil Company, the achievement was marked by the completion of well BUCN-226H in early November 2025. He told the state-owned Iraqi News Agency (INA) that the accomplishment is part of the company's strategy to develop oil fields using advanced global technologies and reflects senior management's commitment to supporting national engineering teams and the international operator in boosting production and improving reservoir recovery efficiency.

The well reached a total depth of 5,626 metres, with a horizontal section of 1,350 metres and a total horizontal displacement of 1,809.9 metres -- setting three new records for the Bazargan field: deepest well, longest horizontal section, and greatest total horizontal displacement.

Laibi added that drilling was completed successfully in a single run using advanced Rotary Steerable System (RSS) equipment and Logging While Drilling (LWD) technology, maintaining optimal mud density to ensure well control and real-time reservoir evaluation.
