Deep Dive: Ruling Shiite alliance moves to form Iraq's next government
Only days after Iraq's legislative polls, the ruling Shiite Coordination Framework has declared itself the "largest bloc" in the next parliament. The move has stunned some observers, as commanding a post-election parliamentary majority typically takes months of often tense negotiations.
Also bucking some predictions, given his rising autonomy ahead of the polls, caretaker Prime Minister Muhammad Shia' Al-Sudani has described his alliance as an "essential part" of the Coordination Framework. However, political analysts suggest that the maneuvering indicates that Sudani's chances of a second term are fading rapidly.
