Politicians hail Iraq-Turkey 'oil-for-water' accord as critics cry foul
Touted as a breakthrough, Iraq and Turkey have signed a "historic" oil-for-water agreement. Officials say the deal will boost both countries' economies while easing Iraq's water crisis.
The accord essentially entails revenues from Baghdad's oil sales to Turkey being funneled into Iraqi water infrastructure projects managed by Turkish firms.
Despite official optimism, critics have charged that the quid-pro-quo is one-sided, and leaves Iraq facing environmental catastrophe.
