Integrity Commission, UNDP discuss Recovery of Stolen Assets

By John Lee.

The Federal Integrity Commission has held talks with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on strengthening bilateral and international coordination to recover smuggled assets and extradite individuals wanted in corruption cases.

The Commission's First Deputy Chairman, Dr Muzhahir al-Jubouri, met UNDP Justice Initiatives Support Project Director Yama Turabi at the Commission's headquarters. He stressed that the asset recovery remains one of the most important priorities for the Commission, noting that international organisations are encouraging the signing of bilateral agreements between member states to facilitate the return of stolen assets.

Dr al-Jubouri outlined key challenges facing Iraq in this area, including differences in national legal systems and the complexity of international mechanisms for asset recovery. He emphasised that while international initiatives and projects are important, they must be adapted to Iraqi laws, administrative procedures and institutional frameworks.

Mr Turabi affirmed UNDP's full readiness to cooperate with Iraq in the fields of corruption prevention and anti-corruption enforcement, including supporting the establishment of partnerships and bilateral agreements on asset recovery and extradition of wanted individuals.

The meeting also reviewed broader challenges facing international organisations when assisting member states, stressing the importance of harmonising procedures, removing bureaucratic obstacles, building institutional capacity, and coordinating efforts to combat corruption.
