Two major road infrastructure projects have been launched to improve connectivity and ease congestion in the central Euphrates region.
- The first project involves construction of a 34-kilometre road linking Karbala province to the highway network, including 14 bridges, one of them spanning the Euphrates River. The project has a total cost of IQD 321 billion (approximately USD 245 million).
- The second project covers the rehabilitation and expansion of the Kifl-Qasim highway axis in Najaf province. It includes construction of a second carriageway over 30 kilometres, five overpasses in each direction, and two grade-separated interchanges, at a cost of IQD 88 billion (around USD 67 million).
The projects form part of a wider programme to support large-scale religious visits, improve traffic flow between Karbala, Najaf and Babil provinces, and reduce long-standing transport bottlenecks. The works are also intended to support industrial and agricultural activity in the region and improve road safety by reducing journey times and accident risks.
The projects were inaugurated via video link by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani.
