Iraq issues Media Restrictions on Security Incidents

By John Lee.

The Ministry of Interior has issued new guidelines restricting the publication and circulation of images and information related to security incidents, citing the need to protect sensitive locations and maintain stability.

The ministry called on media organisations and the public to comply fully with official instructions and to act responsibly in handling ongoing events.

The directives include:

  • Strict prohibition on publishing or sharing videos and images of targeted locations on social media
  • Advisory for citizens not to approach incident sites to ensure personal safety and allow security forces to operate
  • Requirement for media outlets to avoid disclosing precise locations or coordinates of incidents
  • Encouragement for the public to report violations via the emergency hotline (911), with confidentiality assured
  • Legal action against violators through the Directorate of Information Crimes, in coordination with the judiciary

The ministry said the measures are part of broader efforts to safeguard national security and prevent misuse of sensitive information by hostile actors.
