The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has provided productive assets and agricultural inputs to rural women and farmers in Karbala Governorate to support agricultural production and strengthen resilience to climate-related challenges.
The initiative was delivered under two FAO projects implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and relevant national and local authorities:
- "Integrating Climate-Smart Agriculture Practices for Empowering Farmers in Iraq", funded by Norway
- "Enhancing Agricultural Livelihoods of Rural Communities Most Vulnerable to Climate Change", funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF)
The support included:
- Specialised equipment for 300 rural women to strengthen the milk and dairy value chain, improve product quality, reduce losses, and increase the value of locally produced dairy products
- Agricultural fertilisers for 140 beneficiaries involved in Farmer Field School activities, including 60 rural women and 80 farmers
- Support to improve vegetable production, sustainable farming practices, and efficient use of agricultural inputs and natural resources
The ceremony was held under the patronage of Minister of Agriculture Abdul Rahim Jassim Al-Shammari and Karbala Governor Nassif Jassim Al-Khattabi.
Attendees included Dr. Mithaq Al-Khafaji, Technical Deputy Minister of Agriculture; Dr. Salah El Hajj Hassan, FAO Representative in Iraq; Mohammed Al-Tayyar, representative of the Governor of Karbala; government officials; agricultural experts; and project beneficiaries.
FAO said the activities support efforts to develop more efficient, inclusive and sustainable agrifood systems, while contributing to food security, women's empowerment, climate resilience, and sustainable agricultural development.
