Iraq's national maritime carrier, Iraqi Line, is to resume commercial shipping operations in the Gulf after a halt of more than 50 years. The first sailing is scheduled to depart from Jebel Ali port in the United Arab Emirates, bound for Umm Qasr port, on 15th October.
According to Iraq's Ministry of Transport, the resumption aims to increase freight movement through Iraqi ports, support regional trade, and expand the national carrier's presence on regional shipping routes. The ministry said the last Iraqi cargo vessel voyages in the region date to the mid-1960s.
The initiative was directed by Transport Minister Wahab Salman Mohammed as part of plans to reactivate national carriers and strengthen their role in transport and trade.
