Iraq Launches Digital Tax Assessment System

By John Lee.

Iraq has launched its first electronic tax assessment system for large taxpayers. The system was introduced at the General Commission for Taxes (GCT) in the presence of Finance Minister Faleh Sari and a number of the ministry's director-generals.

According to the Ministry of Finance, the system allows taxpayers to complete tax assessment procedures and make payments remotely, without visiting the authority's premises. It also enables electronic archiving of documents and allows audit and compliance teams to review tax returns, with the aim of improving efficiency and protecting public revenues.

The ministry described the system as the first phase of a broader digital transformation of tax administration, with plans to extend coverage beyond large taxpayers to other taxpayer categories in subsequent phases.
