By John Lee.

A river taxi service along the Tigris in Baghdad is being prepared for launch to investors, according to the National Investment Commission (NIC).

A coordination meeting chaired by NIC head Adel Dakhil Muhammad al-Yasiri reviewed the technical and planning requirements for the project, which is being developed under Diwan Order No. 251513.

The meeting, attended by representatives of relevant ministries and government bodies, focused on the following elements:

  • Preparing the river channel and identifying locations for river taxi stations
  • Designing stations in a contemporary tourism style suited to the capital's riverfront aesthetic
  • Developing supporting tourism infrastructure, including restaurants, entertainment facilities, and service kiosks, based on proposals from the Tourism Authority
  • Incorporating accessibility standards for people with special needs
  • Mapping land ownership on both banks of the Tigris to prevent conflicts and attract investment

Al-Yasiri stated that the project aims to transform the Tigris riverbanks into urban and economic spaces that promote tourism and ease traffic congestion, and that the NIC will continue preparing the file for presentation to local and international investors.
