The Kurdistan Region’s Minister for Commerce and Industry has said that a new Turkish- Iraqi border crossing point is needed to reduce the traffic at the Ibrahim Khalil [Ibrahim al Khalil] gate, according to AKnews.
The Ibrahim Khalil crossing (pictured) is the only official route connecting the Kurdistan Region to Turkey, and hundreds of trucks and visitors cross there every day.
The proposal is under discussion by Turkish, Iraqi and the Regional officials, Sinan Chalabi told Cihan news agency at the sidelines of a meeting with 25 Turkish businessmen who were in the Region to appraise their investment prospects in Kurdistan.
However, in June the Kurdistan Region’s Prime Minister, Barham Salih, told Reuters that Iraq is looking to open two new border crossings with Turkey and to set up a free trade zone in Iraq's northern city of Zakho, 440 km north of Baghdad.
