Speaking to the students about the recent demonstrations in the Kurdistan Region, Sir John said, “It took we British 700 years to produce the democratic system that we have today. It cannot be achieved in a matter of weeks, or months, or even years; the important thing is that you progress towards it, and that Kurdistan is emphatically doing.” He continued, “The history of my own country, means that we understand very clearly how challenging it is to build and develop political systems that will endure. But, it is crucial that governments will meet the aspirations of their nations — the future of the country depends upon it. And, the most encouraging aspect that I see when I visit here now is that it is being achieved through dialogue and through debate.”
