Baghdad's Provincial Council has started construction on the first industrial city in the Iraqi capital on Saturday, according to a report from AKnews.
The council announced its plan last October to build the $250m (291bn IQD) city in Nahrawan district, to the south of Baghdad.
The area is being built by the Iraqi company Majd al-Ard and covers approximately 2,000 donums (500 hectares). Construction of the environmentally-friendly city is due to be completed by 2013.
The council has also formed a high committee to facilitate the legal and administrative procedures for the project, to supervise the construction of the city and to manage the transfer of industrial units from the Iraqi capital into the new city.
