Sweden Appoints Diplomat and Trade Rep in Erbil

The Vice President of Sweden’s Trade Council said, “The Kurdistan Region is a natural starting point for any company who would like to do business in Iraq, or anywhere in the Middle East for that matter.” “So, of course we of the Swedish Trade Council should have an office here,” he concluded.

Sweden’s exports to Iraq grew by more than 30% last year to total more than $160 million, and with 11 major companies already operating in Kurdistan, the opening of the new offices in Erbil should help sustain this growth for years to come.

Swedish Minister of Trade Björling and members of her delegation also joined a number of KRG ministers and officials to inaugurate the Swedish Transport Academy in Erbil during their visit. The Academy opened in early April, and it currently provides training in information technology (IT), English and mechanics. The Academy also plans to include courses in advanced mechanics, driver training, sales and marketing as it further develops its operations later in the year.

The Swedish officials were also joined by a sizeable trade delegation during their visit, and in addition to those mentioned above, they attended meetings and events with a number of KRG ministers, representatives and institutions over the four days. These included engagements with Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani; Minister of the Interior Karim Sinjari; Minister of Trade and Industry Sinan Chalabi; Minister of Education Asmat Muhamad Khalid; Minister of Labour and Social Affairs Ms Asos Najib Abdullah; the Head of the Department of Foreign Relations, Minister Falah Mustafa; the Chairman of the Investment Board, Minister Herish Muharam; and the Governor of Erbil, Nawzad Hadi.
