Flights between Tehran and the Kurdistan Region began for the first time on Monday, said Tehran-based Mahan Airlines.
Hossein Hosseini, the Director of Marketing for the airline, said
“We are delighted to announce Erbil as our first new route for 2012. We have seen significant growth in Northern Iraq economy during past two years and Erbil as a focal point of trade and tourism for that region.
"Additionally, the strong demand shown by the businessmen from Erbil to travel to Iran and the continued growth of trade volume between Iran and Iraq has created the right opportunities for introducing direct flights between the two cities of Erbil and Tehran.”
The twice-weekly (Monday and Friday), non-stop flight will use an Airbus A310 with 185 economy and 10 business class seats. Erbil will be the 19h international destination served by the airline.
