The Provincial Council in Babel [Babil] has voted unanimously for "the participation of each of Karbala, Babil and Najaf provinces in managing the Mid-Euphrates airport, which is hopefully established in the land among the three provinces".
The Head of the Investment Committee in the Council, Mahdi Aakul, told AIN:
"The participation will be equal for the three provinces as it is considered as one of the strategic projects [which will provide] services to Babel and Middle Euphrates provinces in addition to developing the infrastructure in the province".
The project is to be designed by a French company (ADPI), but according to the report from AIN it may be complicated by plans to build an oil refinery in the area.
