“What we have seen here today is the last procedural phase of the electoral process before the 20 April elections,” said Mr. Jose Maria Aranaz, head of the UN IEAT. “It is encouraging to see such a large gathering of candidates and representatives of the lists running in the next elections, as well as many local observers, many women, and a strong media presence that broadcast the event live.”
Mr. Aranaz said that the completion of the lottery now opens the door for political campaigns to start. To this end, IHEC used the opportunity to distribute a one-page flyer outlining the Rules for Fair Campaigning to the political parties represented at the event.
Following the lottery, other technical preparations will also begin, such as the production of ballot papers. The UN IEAT continues to support the IHEC with preparations for the Governorate Council Elections and other electoral events due to take place in Iraq in the coming years.
