The new ambassador also met Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani to discuss ways of establishing political, economic and energy ties with Canada. In their meeting, Ambassador Saccomani announced further plans to establish an Embassy Office in Erbil by early 2014.
Prime Minister Barzani congratulated the ambassador on assuming his post and stressed that Kurdistan welcomes stronger ties with Canada, specifically economic and trade links. He added that the government will support Canada's efforts in establishing diplomatic presence.
During the meeting, they also spoke about the ongoing violence in Syria and its impact on Iraq as a whole. Prime Minister Barzani highlighted the aid the KRG is providing to those fleeing from Syria and called for more aid from the international community, including Canada.
The delegation later met with Minister Falah Mustafa, Head of the Department of Foreign Relations, and other officials. Ambassador Saccomani was accompanied by the Charge d'affairs in Baghdad, Ms Stephanie Duhaime.
