Oryza reports that Iraq’s rice planting, at around 80,000 hectares, is 24 percent below the Ministry of Agriculture target of 106,000 hectares.
According to the USDA, Iraq is expected to produce about 180,000 tons of rice (milled basis) in 2013-14, and import around 1.4 million tons to meet domestic demand.
Iraq imports about 85 percent of total food grain consumption.
Wheat production, however, is likely to reach around 3.2 million tons in 2012-13, the highest in recent years. The Ministry wants to increase the wheat area by around 25 percent in 2013-14. Iraq may still have to import around 3.2 million tons of wheat in 2013-14 to meet domestic demand for around 6.4 million tons.
