Minister Mustafa briefed the Deputy Minister and his accompanying delegation on the economic opportunities available in Kurdistan with emphasis on the different sectors that need rebuilding. He added that the KRG estimates that almost US $32 billion is needed to help Kurdistan establish normal levels of infrastructure, indicating the volume of business that can be achieved by companies wishing to work in Kurdistan.
The visiting delegation spoke about the different areas of potential cooperation with both sides agreeing that this was possible via a number of ways, including educational, cultural, social and business exchanges. Minister Mustafa added, ‘This is promising and encouraging to hear. We look forward to these types of visits and we assure you that we want to develop this relationship further.’
As Kurdistan is often referred to as the gateway to the rest of Iraq, the Deputy Minister said, ‘I believe that Kurdistan should look at Bulgaria as the gateway to the rest of Europe. We can offer Kurdish people plenty of opportunities not only in terms of business, but as a holiday destination given our efforts in building our tourism sector.’
The meeting ended with members from both sides excited at the prospect of further engagement in the near future with the hope that the Bulgarian Consulate General in Erbil opens before the end of the year. The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Head of the DFR, Karwan Jamal, the Assistant Head of the DFR, Siham Jabali, the President of the Haskovo Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Yancho Yanev and other senior officials from the KRG and Bulgarian governments.
