A Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) official has announced that security forces need more advanced equipment to clear minefields in areas once controlled by the Islamic State (IS). He also suggested there was a need for machines that can detect mines and also dispose of buried ordinance.
“During the short time that IS controlled some areas of Kurdistan, they planted mines. The Kurdistan Region’s Mines Affairs Directorate has started to clear those areas,” said official of the Kurdistan Region’s Mines Affairs Directorate Ako Aziz.
His statement also included a request for ordinance disposal specialists from the international community to assist with the mine clearing process.
