A joint Iraqi-Kurdish military force of up to 25,000 fighters is being prepared to retake the city of Mosul from the Islamic State (IS, ISIS, ISIL).
A senior US military official said the operation to recapture the northern city will probably take place in April or May, as the heat could cause problems later in summer.
Defense News reports that there are currently about 3,200 Iraqi army forces going through US-run training centers in Iraq, in addition to the 2,000 or so already trained.
They are being trained by about 2,600 US troops at five training bases throughout the country, along with some Canadian, UK, Spanish, Danish and German special forces assisting in the effort.
