Zekra Al Wash [Thikra Alwash] (pictured), a civil engineer and director general of the Ministry of Higher Education, has been named as the new mayor of Baghdad.
According to a report from AFP, this makes her the first woman to be given such a post in the whole country.
Al Wash replaces Naeem Aboub [Naeem Abaob al-Kaabi], who was dismissed last week.
