Iraq's Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, has ordered the suspension of a recent tax hike on real estate transfers.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister's office, the increase was issued by the Director General of the General Tax Authority without approval from the High Committee for Tax Reform, and it contradicts a previous cabinet decision (No. 24074 of 2024).
It adds that the Ministry of Finance has initiated an investigation into those responsible for the unauthorized decision, which it said caused confusion among citizens.
Al-Sudani emphasized the importance of tax reform as part of the government's broader economic strategy to boost non-oil revenues. He stressed the need for tax policies that align with the comprehensive vision of the reform committee while minimizing the burden on the public.
