Sunni MPs stall new Iraqi law on Ba'ath-era land transfers

Iraq's parliament has once again delayed a vote on a proposed property restitution law that has sparked contention.

First introduced in April, the bill's provisions aim to return lands confiscated under the previous Ba'ath Party to their original Kurdish and Turkmen owners.

The stalling follows significant pushback, primarily by Sunni Arab lawmakers who fear it could lead to the displacement of Arab residents.

But proponents claim such concerns are unfounded, assuring critics that no one will be dispossessed by the legislation.
