Following laying of the foundation stone by Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, construction has officially begun on the 40-metre road project in Soran.
The five-kilometres-long highway will feature three lanes in each direction, alongside a 2.5-metre-wide pedestrian pavement on both sides. A key highlight of the project is a 250-metre-long bridge standing 32 metres high, making it the tallest bridge in both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
The bridge alone is estimated to cost IQD 28 billion [$21 million], while the total project budget stands at IQD 50.5 billion [$38 million].
According to a statement from the KRG, this highway will enhance connectivity between the Soran and Mergasur [Mergasor] districts, modernising the area's infrastructure and providing significant benefits to local communities.
