Chinese Deputy Ambassador to Iraq, Xue Haifeng, has told the state-owned Iraqi News Agency (INA) that Iraq-China cooperation continues to gain momentum, covering sectors ranging from energy and development to agriculture and defence.
He emphasised that high-level exchanges have played a central role in strengthening bilateral ties, citing recent meetings between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, as well as last year's visit by Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein to Beijing.
On financial cooperation, Haifeng noted that bilateral ties are increasingly underpinned by financing partnerships, with Chinese development finance institutions recently holding productive discussions with Iraqi officials in Baghdad.
Iraq is China's fourth-largest crude oil supplier, exporting 64 million tonnes in 2024. Haifeng also underlined China's contribution to Iraq's military capabilities, providing advanced weapons that have supported counter-terrorism operations against remnants of ISIS.
He added that China remains ready to continue supporting Iraq's defence sector, expand imports of high-quality Iraqi goods such as dates, and further develop cooperation in agriculture, energy, and natural resources through Chinese companies active in Iraq.
