Al-Monitor has confirmed that the American journalist kidnapped in Baghdad on Tuesday was Shelly Kittleson, an Al-Monitor contributor.
Ms Kittleson, a freelancer, has also reported for BBC World Service, Politico, Foreign Policy and others.
A statement from Iraq's Ministry of Interior said that a foreign journalist has been kidnapped by unidentified individuals, that security forces launched an immediate operation to track the perpetrators, and that the pursuit resulted in one suspect being arrested and a vehicle used in the crime seized.
US State Department spokesperson Dylan Johnson said the suspect taken into custody has ties to the Iranian-aligned militia group Kataib Hizballah (KH).
