Iraq and Portugal have discussed the possible reopening of the Portuguese Embassy in Baghdad, along with broader efforts to strengthen bilateral relations, according to the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein spoke by telephone on Saturday with his Portuguese counterpart, Paulo Rangel. The two ministers discussed ways to develop ties between the two countries across various fields, with the reopening of the Portuguese Embassy in Baghdad identified as a means of enhancing cooperation.
The call also covered relations between Iraq and the European Union, with both sides noting the importance of Portugal's support for Iraq's engagement with the bloc. The ministers exchanged views on regional developments, including the impact of military operations in the Strait of Hormuz on regional security and the global economy.
Rangel invited Hussein to visit Portugal next month to continue consultations. Hussein welcomed the invitation.
