Syria, UAE in Talks over Iraq Transit Route for Gulf Trade

By John Lee.

Syria and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have held talks on establishing a logistics corridor linking Syrian ports with Gulf markets via Iraq.

According to the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), Qutaiba Badawi, Chairman of Syria's General Authority for Land and Sea Ports, met a delegation that included UAE Chargé d'Affaires Abdul Hakeem al-Nuaimi and Mohammed Al Menhali, Regional Chief Executive Officer of AD Ports Group.

The proposed route would connect Syrian ports with Iraq's Port of Umm Qasr before extending to Khalifa Port in the UAE. The project aims to reduce shipping times and transportation costs while improving regional supply chains.

The talks also covered investment opportunities in Syria's ports, free zones and inland dry ports, including a proposed logistics hub at the al-Tanf border crossing.
