Samarra Drug Co Begins Local Production of Asthma Inhalers

By John Lee.

The General Company for Drug Industries and Medical Appliances in Samarra has begun operating Iraq's first production line for oral asthma inhalers, with an annual capacity of nine million units.

According to the company, which falls under the Ministry of Industry and Minerals, the new line is based at its Baghdad plant for the production of medicines, appliances and medical gases, and was established under a partnership contract with the private sector.

The company's General Manager, chemical engineer Mohammed Abdul Qader Al-Naimi, said the line is designed to produce nine types of asthma inhalers, with capacity to be increased further. He added that two products, Biutadine and Samazone, have already been completed, with registration procedures under way with the Ministry of Health ahead of commercial production.

The project aims to help meet the needs of the health sector and support self-sufficiency in pharmaceutical products, in line with the goals of Minister of Industry and Minerals Mohammed Nouri to strengthen the national pharmaceutical industry and reduce imports.
