Iraq's central bank governor cannot fight crime on his own
On June 19, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) placed Iraq on its grey list, subjecting the country to increased monitoring over money laundering, terrorist financing and proliferation financing - the funding of nuclear, chemical, biological and radiological weapons.
Just two days later, Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi appointed Nizar Nasser Hussein, head of Iraq's Office for Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism, as governor of the Central Bank of Iraq [CBI].
A coincidence? I don't think so.
