Iraq Holds Separate Trade Talks with US and Iran

Iraq's Ministry of Trade held separate meetings on Sunday with the US chargé d'affaires in Baghdad and the Iranian commercial attaché, covering ways to strengthen bilateral economic and trade relations with each country.

Trade Minister Mustafa Nizar Jumaa received Steven Fagin, the US chargé d'affaires, to discuss expanding American companies' participation in the Iraqi market, activating existing memoranda of understanding and contracts in sectors including oil, gas, and health, and reactivating the Iraqi-American Business Council. The minister invited US companies to participate in the 50th Baghdad International Fair.

In a separate meeting, the ministry's administrative undersecretary, Sattar al-Jabiri, met with Iranian commercial attaché Mohammad Reza Karimzadeh to discuss increasing trade volumes, addressing obstacles to bilateral trade flows, and leveraging modern technology in trade mechanisms. Topics also included the Development Road project, industrial and commercial cities, and free zones. The two sides discussed preparations for an upcoming Iraqi-Iranian joint committee meeting, to be preceded by a virtual session. The Iranian attaché invited the Iraqi side to meet with Iranian commercial and industrial chambers in Tehran.
