An Iraqi member of parliament has been sentenced to seven years in prison for illicit enrichment and ordered to repay more than IQD 61 billion (USD 46.6 million) in unlawful assets and equivalent financial penalties.
According to the Federal Commission of Integrity, the Central Criminal Court for Anti-Corruption issued an in-person verdict against MP Alia Nusaif Jassim under Article 19/Second of the amended Integrity Commission and Illicit Enrichment Law No. 30 of 2011.
The court ordered the convicted MP to return IQD 14,239,590,000 (USD 10.9 million) and USD 12,442,500 in illicitly acquired assets, and imposed a financial penalty equivalent to the total value of the illicit enrichment under Article 19/Fourth of the same law.
The court also issued a separate sentence of three years' rigorous imprisonment for concealing information on a financial disclosure form, under Article 19/Fifth of the law, with the heavier sentence to be applied. The ruling confirmed the seizure of the convicted MP's movable and immovable assets, and granted the Federal Commission of Integrity the right to seek compensation for damages once the verdict becomes final.
