Iraq's Ministry of Transport is advancing preparations for direct negotiations with the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening technical cooperation and developing national hydrographic capabilities.
According to the Ministry of Transport, a dedicated committee reviewed a revised draft MoU prepared in coordination with relevant government bodies to ensure it meets legal and technical requirements. The committee also discussed procedural steps to be completed before negotiations with the British side can begin.
Ahmed Jabbar Hassan, Director General of the Legal Department, emphasised the importance of maximising the benefits of Iraq's membership of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), particularly in the areas of national staff training, technical capacity building, and the exchange of expertise. He noted that the committee is continuing to coordinate with relevant bodies to complete the necessary requirements ahead of formal negotiations.
The meeting was attended by the Deputy Director General of the Supreme Maritime Authority, the head of its legal division, a representative of the General Company for Ports of Iraq (GCPI), a representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and a representative of the Agreements Division of the Legal Department.
