Iraq Sees 22% Growth in Tax Revenues

By John Lee.

Iraq's Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, chaired a meeting of the High Committee for Tax Reform on Thursday.

The committee reviewed the implementation of various government reform measures that led to a 22% increase in tax revenues as of early August, compared to the same period last year. Al-Sudani emphasized that tax reform is a strategic necessity for Iraq's non-oil economy and should not only be seen as a fallback during periods of oil revenue fluctuations.

The meeting discussed broadening the tax base, addressing taxpayer challenges, and creating new tax laws with support from Germany's GIZ (Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit), focusing on international standards and supporting the private sector. Progress was also noted in tax compliance within Iraq's oil extraction sector.
