Iraq Blocks IMDb Movie Database for "Inappropriate Content"

By John Lee.

Iraq's Ministry of Communications has confirmed the decision to block access to the IMDb movie database, citing what it says is its promotion of "inappropriate and unethical" content.

Nabil Abdul Baqi, General Manager of the Al-Salam State Company [Peace Company], a government body under the control of the Communications Ministry, stated that the decision followed thorough monitoring and analysis of the site's content.

The ministry determined that IMDb hosted material deemed offensive to Iraqi societal values and traditions, including explicit films and other unethical pages. Abdul Baqi emphasized that the move was deliberate and based on consistent monitoring, countering claims of arbitrary censorship.

The site is owned  by a subsidiary of Amazon.
